CAMPING

Avery is located in the middle of the St. Joe River District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. There are eight Forest Service campgrounds situated on the main river corridor. Countless disperse sites are also available for all types of camping experiences, from primitive and tent camping to large motor homes, and everything in-between. Big Game Hunting

General elk, deer, bear, cougar and wolf hunting are available on the St. Joe River. Moose and goat hunting is by permit. Resident and non-resident licenses and tags are available at Avery Store & Motel. Avery Store & Motel is also a big game check point and has a meat cooler for wild game.

ATV Riding

There is endless ATV riding on Forest Service roads - many with little or no other motor vehicle traffic. We sell premium non-ethanol gas so you can ride all day or until the cows come home!

Snowmobiling

Avery is a part of the Shoshone County Groomer Program. There are hundreds of miles of riding and endless play areas. Four trailheads leave from Avery. One warming hut is available on the trail. We sell premium non-ethanol gas. Sign maps are located at major intersections on the hill.

Road Biking

87 Miles of paved highway from St. Maries to the Idaho Montana border that follows right along the beautiful St. Joe River. Avery is your halfway point. Stop at Avery Store & Motel to relax, have a cool drink and a bite to eat. We sell premium non ethanol gas for your favorite ride. For those ready to keep riding, it's only 60 miles into St. Regis Montana (with the last 10 hard packed gravel). Northern Rocky Rider Top Tours describes the St. Joe River Scenic Byway as "Technical, Twisty, Remote and Stunningly Beautiful"! The roadway is all about curves, from switchbacks to good sweepers.

Hiking & Horseback Riding

Numerous trails blanket the region and offer traditional foot hikers or horse riders varying levels of difficulty. Trails located in the St. Joe River area follow deep valley bottoms or high, scenic ridge tops. Remnants of historic logging activities are scattered throughout the area.

Mountain Biking

The Pearson Trailhead of The Route of the Hiawatha Bike Trail is only 9 miles from Avery. Nearly fifteen miles of the route opened for mountain bikers in May 1998. The stretch between East Portal and Pearson Trailhead includes the 1.6 mile long Taft tunnel as well as nine other tunnels and seven high steel trestles. Tickets available at the Trail Head or online at www.ridethehiawatha.com. Another local bike route includes the Trail of the Coeur d'Alene's. This is a paved bike trail that begins in Plummer and travels east 72 miles through the Chain Lakes to Enaville, where the trail continues on to Mullan near the Idaho/Montana border and ties into the Route of the Hiawatha.

Fishing

Native westslope cutthroat and bull trout are a unique resource, and one of Idaho's living gems. The St. Joe River is catch-and-release for cutthroat. Above Avery, fisherman may only use barbless hooks and no bait. Below Avery, barbed hooks and bait may be used. Traditional fishing, floating and fly fishing are abundant throughout the season. Easy access to the river makes for enjoyable fishing tales for any fisherman, regardless of age. Avery Store & Motel is an Idaho Fish & Game Vendor for your fishing licenses.

River Rafting

The St. Joe River contains over 120 miles of free-flowing river which offers challenging adventure to canoers, kayakers and rafters. All types of water can be encountered. Early spring brings raging white water suitable only for teams of expert kayakers. By mid July the river is perfect for pontoon boats for fishing, beginning canoeist or family tubing.
